Good Bundle for Quarkers

The PowerXChange, developers and resellers of plug-ins and extensions for all types of graphic programs, most notably QuarkXpress, have introduced a nice bundle of two excellent programs: Flightcheck Designer and MarkzToolz 5.5.

Flightcheck Designer is the essential utility for all Quark users, as it collects fonts and pictures, plus reviews the document for any number of potential problems. It’s been around forever, and is still better at collecting than newer versions of Quark.

MarkzToolz is not as ubiquitous, but still stands out as an absolutely killer tool with a host of features. Most important, it is able to convert Quark 6 docs down into OS9, in either Quark 4 or 5. How successful this actually is depends on the complexity of the file, and how many new features are employed that don’t exist in older versions. Despite this, it is far cheaper than the alternative, which is to run three concurrent Quark licenses of versions 4, 5 and 6 just to save a Quark 6 doc in the legacy version 4 format.

This inability to save down smacks harshly of Adobe’s recent InDesign CS offering, which so far remains completely removed from version 2 compatibility. No, I’m not going to rehash the issue again, but I am waiting for MarkzWare to release an InDesign CS version of MarkzToolz. $200 is an outright steal to remove the same headaches Quark upgraders have been experiencing.
